The Workshop: Native American Cultural Awareness for Suicide Prevention is an immersive presentation designed to provide an experiential appreciation of Native American (NA) Cultural Sensitivity, understanding, and holistic healing. Universal Native American cultural diversity between Tribes is explained. Participants will learn the significance of ritual, the nuanced levels of assimilation versus traditional values practiced, and why these concepts are important when working with clients. Learn what the Historical Trauma Response is (depression, suicide, self-medicating, suicide clusters, epidemics); suicide prevention; Medicine Wheel teaching; Cycle of Healing, Post Traumatic Growth, and helping clients increase their resiliency zone through cultural identity. Kathleen’s presentation will also address the Indigenous historical perspectives on the environment, and cultural understandings from today's present day issues on climate change. Kathleen will discuss possibilities in navigating therapeutic conversations with clients on concerns with climate change from a Strength Based perspective.
About Kathleen: Kathleen Little Leaf is the Behavioral Health Consultant and Provider, holds a Master’s in Social Work degree, and is a Licensed Addictions Counselor.
Kathleen Little Leaf is an enrolled tribal member from the Blackfoot Peigan Tribe, and is a descendant Blackfeet tribal member. Kathleen has worked within Indian Health Services providing Mental Health and Addiction Treatment and Prevention, Addiction Education, and Addiction Recovery services for over a decade.
Kathleen is passionate about the importance of utilizing Native American culture as a mode, modality, or therapeutic approach in healing within different areas of need within Indian Country.
