Climate Psychology Study Group

Next Meeting: Friday, November 19, 4:00-5:30 PM PST (Online)

Discussing Sally Weintrobe’s new book: The Psychologial Roots of the Climate Crisis: Neoliberal Exceptionalism and the Crisis of Uncare (readings provided)

Facilitated by: Bob Berley

Sponsored by Northwest Alliance for Psychoanalytic Study
Convened by Andrew Bryant and Alexandra Wolcott (with rotating facilitators)

This month, we will be sharing thoughts and reactions to excerpts from Sally Weintrobe’s newest work. The focus will begin with a quote from Michael Rustin that opens Ch. 11: “in what containing social environments can human beings tolerate recognition of .. each other’s states of mind, desires, needs and sufferings?” The emerging realization of the Other is a central idea in psychoanalytic theory, along with the early development of an attachment that tolerates dependence as a foundation for connection and love. Whether this can be created within a society seems to be a major difficulty in present-day America, and one that is mirrored in the therapeutic setting.

This study group will meet monthly during the academic year. Each meeting will focus on a theme related to climate change, ecology, and psychology, and will discuss important readings and other media related to the nexus of climate, ecology, and psychoanalysis. Plans are now being made for the winter sessions. You are welcome to attend all the meetings or just the ones that interest you.
