Sponsored by the Clinical Support Subcommittee of CPA-NA.
In the face of the growing array of anxiety, grief, and trauma emerging from the climate and environmental crisis, clinicians have been seeking ways to expand their thinking and approaches in offering various kinds of support and care. In this workshop, we will view the American Psychological Association training video “Working with Clients Experiencing Climate Distress,” allowing for a closer examination of considerations for clinical work.
In this video, APA author of All the Feelings Under the Sun Leslie Davenport and clinical/climate psychologist Wendy Greenspun discuss an understanding of the complexities of climate-informed therapy and of the multi-layered, intersectional injustices embedded in the climate crisis. Dr. Greenspun demonstrates her climate-aware approach in a teletherapy session with a client who has not yet discussed his climate distress, illustrating an example of opening this topic and working with the emergent feelings. Specific clinical moments and interventions will be highlighted and discussed in terms of broader applications and considerations for the consulting room and beyond. Following the video, Ms. Davenport and Dr. Greenspun will offer further discussion and questions with the audience.
